Many people will think of the "uniform temptation". In the eyes of foreigners, Japanese female students in short skirts seem too exposed and sexy.

However, in Japan, there are far more acceptable opinions than objections. Student skirts are considered "a symbol of youth".

What is the past and present life of Japanese school uniform? Where does the uniform skirt of female students come from?

Japanese uniforms come from the European Union after the Meiji Restoration.

School uniform

Due to the influence of martial traditions in Japanese society, the earliest uniforms of Japanese students appeared to be "military uniforms".

In 1879, the Japanese Imperial Academy affiliated Institute of Education designated students to wear the prototype "Prussian army uniform", characterized by black and collar. After that, Imperial University of Tokyo (now University of Tokyo) also designated it as a student uniform.

The female students were influenced by the emancipation trend of women during the Meiji and Tai Zheng period. At first, they used uniform sleeves and kimono trousers as uniform uniforms.

In the early 1920s, some of Kansai and Kyushu's westernized schools began to quote from the British private schools, the wide collar shirts made by the British Navy sailors' clothes, the pleated skirts and stockings as the girls' uniforms, which were the girls' sailor suits that became popular in Japan and became "a great spectacle" of Japanese school clothing culture.

However, with the development of the times, especially after the post-war settlement of the traditional militarization of Japanese society and the prosperity of the social economy, modern Japanese school uniforms began to replace the uniforms of military uniforms in Japanese schools.

Boys were dressed in suits and ties, wearing dark trousers or British style trousers, while girls were wearing a suit shirt, a vest sweater or a long coat.

The usage rate of sailor clothing has been declining.

Japan traditionally emphasizes discipline and unity, so its student uniform essentially represents a compulsory culture.

However, as the Global Times reporter observed in Japan, many Japanese students are not forced to wear school uniforms, but rather a conscious habit or even hobby.

The reason is that in addition to the long-standing group concept and school pride, a survey by Japanese social survey in 1990s found that over 80% of the students surveyed approved that the uniform made by the school was "very fashionable" and its beauty was not inferior to that of private clothing.

Many people even wear their uniforms after graduation, even after graduation.

Sailors' suits and pleated skirts are, in a sense, a sign of sexual harassment, pornography, and even aid in communication.

However, in Japan, there is far more recognition than the objection to the "short" as for girls' uniform skirts.

For many female middle school students, school uniform skirt is "part of personal identity", "take off sailor suit" or change skirt is the same as "farewell youth".

Japanese boys' uniform "Zhi Jie" has a "tough guy color". Now it is more used as a uniform for male students to participate in major ceremonies and sports matches when refueling, so as to emphasize respect for "traditional spirit".
