Port workers at Montreal, the largest port in eastern Canada, will strike on March 21.

Canadian Unio, representing port workers in Montreal Contract negotiations between n of public employees and the maritime Employers Association have encountered obstacles. On February 16, the union informed its members that the contract negotiations had been suspended and were preparing to vote for the 60 day strike. The port labor contract has been in dispute since the end of 2018.

From the "confrontation upgraded to industrial action" last summer, most of the port business was paralyzed, leading to serious disruption of the supply chain, which took two months to sort out. The strike truce is valid until March 21.

If contract negotiations fail to reach an agreement on March 21, dockers will strike at the port, which will handle 35 million tons of goods and commodities by 2020. The Canadian government has asked the two sides to work towards an agreement, noting that Canada "is very well aware of the central role of the port of Montreal in transporting goods to the most populous part of the country".

Just last year, port of Montreal port workers and inspectors staged a series of rotation strikes, forcing 21 container ships to move to other ports, while 80000 20 foot containers were either shelved or diverted.

"We haven't fully recovered from the port strike last August," said Bruce Rodgers, executive director of ciffa. According to Statistics Canada, the strike cost wholesalers C $600 million (US $475 million) in sales. Another strike will put Canada's economy in trouble. "

Bulk products, such as oil, fertilizer and iron ore, account for 63% of the total tonnage of Montreal's cargo volume; last year, the port handled more than 1.6 million containers, and many small and medium-sized enterprises rely on containers to transport goods, such as food and textiles.

Hapag Lloyd, one of the world's largest container shipping companies, said in an e-mail to customers that it was encouraging customers to find alternatives to Montreal before the armistice on March 21 and was prepared to change the route of the goods if possible.
