The cotton industry has compiled a complete cotton life cycle inventory according to the cotton outlook twenty-first Century plan.

The data will serve as a benchmark for global cotton life cycle assessment and will ultimately serve as a reliable basis for sustainable textile operation.

The life cycle inventory is used to quantify energy, materials and environmental data for cradle to gate and gate to gate during cotton production.

Life cycle assessment establishes a model for the environmental impact of cotton garments (knitted golf shirts and woven cotton trousers) from cotton fields to consumers, washing, ironing, using and discarding (cradle to grave).

The processing data of cotton fiber are collected from three largest cotton producing countries - China, India and the United States.

Similarly, textile processing data are representative of the four textile manufacturing giants - Turkey, India, mainland China and Latin America. The relevant information is also used as a global average.

Data for tailoring, sewing and consumer use are supplemented by indirect data sources.

Life cycle assessment is centered on cotton, so it is not compared with other fibers' impact on the environment.

Cotton Incorporated president and CEO Berrye Worsham said that the textile industry and consumers were worried about the green marketing driven by competition. This plan was presented as a fact and established a standard to measure the improvement of cotton's environmental impact.

The data will be published through different pipelines.
