Academic wear can be traced back to the Middle Ages in the West. However, before the emergence of academic costume in medieval universities, this special costume was roughly equivalent to our school uniform today, and did not mean the end of academic studies.

In medieval Europe, men and women in towns wore robes, and cold halls and ventilated buildings made people have to wear long gowns and hood headgear.

Since thirteenth Century, with the promotion of the college system, academic dress has gradually become a ceremonial symbol of different academic degrees.

Clothes & Accessories

The present costume is made of gowns, headscarves, hats and tassels.

Robes are the most important, bachelor's degree.

It's open sleeves (some half sleeves); the master's robe is square sleeves, the cuffs are wide and curved, and the doctor's gowns are trumpet sleeves.

The headscarf evolved from a medieval hood. Now it's just a shoulder from the shoulders to the back. Only a master's and doctor's degree suit has such a scarf called "scarf".

There are two kinds of hats, one is a bachelor cap, the other is a square square hat. It looks like a plastering tool, so it is commonly called "mortarboard".

A master's or doctor's wear is called "Tam", which is made of velvet material. The master's is square, while the doctor is six horns or octagonal.

The tassels on the hat usually use different colors to represent different specialties, but special colors are used at special times. For example, Stevens college, when celebrating the school building 175th anniversary, uses white tassels instead of the traditional black tassel.

Different styles of degree dress polymerized the small group of "students", but at the same time they hid a strict hierarchy of customs.

In the eyes of outsiders, they are not very different, but for every person in the system, each distinction represents an insurmountable grade limit.

All ceremonial costumes, military uniform, police uniform or other uniform have the function of aggregation and differentiation.
